Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has commanded Iranian forces to launch a "direct" attack against Israel, according to a report Wednesday.

Three Iranian officials confirmed the situation to The New York Times. The news comes hours after Hamas’ leader, Ismail Haniyeh, was assassinated in Tehran on Wednesday.

The White House has been unable to independently verify Haniyeh's death as of Wednesday afternoon, but Tehran is placing the blame on the Israel Defense Forces. Israel launched a strike on Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday, but has neither claimed responsibility nor denied killing Haniyeh.

"The criminal, terrorist Zionist regime martyred our dear guest in our territory and has caused our grief, but it has also prepared the ground for a severe punishment," Khamenei's English-language X account said on Wednesday.

IRAN TRYING TO SABOTAGE TRUMP'S PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN: US INTELLIGENCE

"Martyr Haniyeh was willing to sacrifice his honorable life in this dignified battle for many years. He was prepared for martyrdom and had sacrificed his children and loved ones on this path."

Commanding Officer of the Israeli Air Force Maj. Gen. Tomer Bar issued an ominous statement later on Wednesday, promising that there is nowhere "too far" for Israel to strike if needed.

"The Israeli Air Force defends and operates in all arenas of the war, enveloping the state of Israel with dozens of aircraft, manned and unmanned, ready and prepared within minutes for any scenario, in any arena," the statement read. "We will act against anyone planning to harm the citizens of the state of Israel, there is nowhere that is too far for us to strike."

Earlier on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country is in a fight "against Iran's axis of evil."

"This is an existential war against a stranglehold of terrorist armies and missiles that Iran would like to tighten around our neck," Netanyahu said, later adding that Israel has heard "threats from all sides," after Israel's recent strike against Beirut.

"We are prepared for any scenario, and we will stand united and determined against any threat," the leader said. "Israel will exact a very heavy price for aggression against us from whatever quarter."

U.S. forces in Iraq conducted a defensive airstrike in the Musayib in Babil Province on Tuesday evening, a U.S. military official confirmed to Fox News.

The strike was carried out at 5 p.m. ET and targeted combatants attempting to launch one-way attack uncrewed aerial systems or OWAUAS, the official said.

"Based on recent attacks in Iraq and Syria, U.S. Central Command assessed that the OWAUAS posed a threat to U.S. and Coalition Forces," the official told Fox News. "This action underscores the United States' commitment to the safety and security of our personnel. We maintain the inherent right to self-defense and will not hesitate to take appropriate action."

The English town of Southport was the scene of clashes between protesters and police the day after the death of at least three girls in a mass stabbing inflicted by an unnamed 17-year-old male.

At least one police van has been set ablaze by the crowds in Southport, which is north of Liverpool. A source describes the town as "quiet."

While plenty of conjecture has been offered online as to the identity of the attacker and his family, both the AP and the Sun report that the suspect was born in Cardiff, Wales.

Merseyside Police have overseen the investigation thus far. Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Bebe King, 6, are the identified victims. Ten more remain hospitalized since the attack.

"There has been much speculation and hypothesis around the status of a 17-year-old male who is currently in police custody and some individuals are using this to bring violence and disorder to our streets," Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss with the Merseyside Police said to the Associated Press.

"We have already said that the person arrested was born in the U.K. and speculation helps nobody at this time."

The Sun reported that the parents of the suspected attacker, born in 2006, moved to the United Kingdom from Rwanda.

A neighbor of the family described them to the Sun as Christians, "very normal," and having a "hard-working father and stay-at-home mother."

Reform U.K. leader Nigel Farage took to social media earlier today in a video statement, positing, "I just wonder whether the truth is being withheld from us. I don't know the answer to that, but I think it is a fair and legitimate question."

"What I do know is something is going horribly wrong in our once beautiful country."

It is unclear what punishments protesters may face. Police vans and garbage bins have been set ablaze in the melee.

The Israel Defense Forces announced the death of Fuad Shukr, the Hezbollah commander who was behind a drone strike that killed 12 children and teens over the weekend.

Shukr, who was also known as Hajj Mohsin, joined Hezbollah in 1985. He was also sought by the U.S. government over his connection to the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing, which targeted U.S. Marines.

Shukr served as a senior adviser to Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah at the time of his death. He died in an IDF strike on Tuesday in southern Beirut, Lebanon.

The IDF confirmed the news in a press release, announcing that its fighter jets "eliminated the Hezbollah terrorist organization's most senior military commander [Shukr]."

Hezbollah has not confirmed that Shukr is deceased.

"As the Head of Hezbollah's Strategic Unit, Fuad was responsible for the majority of Hezbollah's most advanced weaponry, including precise-guided missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, long-range rockets, and UAVs," the release said. "He was responsible for force build-up, planning, and execution of terror attacks against the State of Israel."

Recently, Hezbollah killed a dozen children on a soccer field in the Druze village of Majdal Shams in an airstrike on Saturday. Hezbollah has denied involvement, though the IDF and U.S. military dispute that claim.

The devastating strike infuriated Israeli officials, prompting the IDF to launch missiles towards Lebanon shortly after. One missile struck an apartment building next to a hospital in the Haret Hreik neighborhood of Beirut.

A senior Israeli official told Fox News earlier on Tuesday that Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant was in contact with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin regarding the present situation.

Israel’s strike on Hezbollah Tuesday prompted anger from Lebanon’s allies, and the country’s foreign minister condemned the operation and urged an international response to the attack.

"I wanted to address what happened over the last few hours in terms of the Middle East and be very clear Israel has the right to defend itself. And I unequivocally support Israel’s right to remain secure and defend the security of Israel," Vice President Kamala Harris told reporters after arriving in Atlanta for a rally.

"What we know in particular is, yes, it has the right to defend itself against the terrorist organization, which is exactly what Hezbollah is. But all of that being said, we still must work on a diplomatic solution to end these attacks. We will continue to do that work."

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced it had carried out a strike Tuesday that targeted Fuad Shukr, the commander accused of orchestrating an attack that killed a dozen children in Israel's Golan Heights over the weekend.

The IDF later claimed its strike "eliminated" him, although the terror group had not yet confirmed his death. Shukr has a $5 million bounty from the U.S. Rewards for Justice program for his central role in the 1983 bombing of the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks in Beirut that killed 241 U.S. military personnel and wounded 128 others.

"We're continuing to work toward a diplomatic resolution that would allow Israeli and Lebanese civilians to return to their homes and live in peace and security," State Department Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said during a briefing.

"We certainly want to avoid any kind of escalation," Patel added, stressing that U.S. support for Israel remains ironclad.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre responded to news of the attack in real time, saying she didn’t have an immediate comment available, but adding that "obviously we are aware of the reports out there. … I leave it to Israel to speak for their own military operations."

Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said the strike hit the southern suburbs of Beirut, which serves as the heart of Hezbollah’s operations. Habib announced Lebanon would file a complaint with the United Nations even as he urged Hezbollah to avoid major escalation.

Iran proxies quickly joined condemnation of the attack. Hamas labeled the strike a "dangerous escalation," and the Houthis called the attack a "blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty."

Iran also condemned the attack. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham said Tuesday that "it goes without saying that the regional states, especially the resistant Lebanese people, will thwart the Zionist regime’s plots under the guise of extremism and sectarianism in the region like before through maintaining their unity and national solidarity as well as strong determination.

Police say a third child is dead after a 17-year-old boy went on a stabbing spree at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class for young children in the United Kingdom on Monday.

The girl, aged 9, died of her injuries early Tuesday, the BBC reported. Five other children and two adults remain in critical condition at local hospitals.

Swift said she was "completely in shock" and still processing "the horror" of the attack.

"These were just little kids at a dance class," she wrote in an Instagram story. "I am at a complete loss for how to ever convey my sympathies to these families."

UK STABBING SPREE LEAVES 2 KIDS DEAD, 9 OTHERS INJURED AT TAYLOR SWIFT-THEMED EVENT: ‘DEEPLY SHOCKING’

The 17-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Investigators are working to determine a motive in the rampage in Southport in northwest England.

Local people left flowers and stuffed animals in tribute at a police cordon on the street lined with brick houses in the seaside resort near Liverpool — nicknamed "sunny Southport" — whose beach and pier attract vacationers from across northwest England.

Witnesses described scenes "from a horror movie" as bloodied children ran from the attack just before noon on Monday. The suspect was arrested soon after on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Police said he was born in Cardiff, Wales, and had lived for years in a village about 3 miles from Southport. He has not yet been charged.

Police said the attack is not being treated as terror-related, and they are not looking for any other suspects.

"We believe the adults who were injured were bravely trying to protect the children who were being attacked," Merseyside Police Chief Constable Serena Kennedy said, according to the Associated Press.

The attack happened at the Hart Space, a local community center. The suspect targeted a Taylor Swift-themed yoga and dance workshop for children ages 6-11.

Witnesses described hearing screams and seeing children run from the scene covered in blood.

TAIPEI - Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang exercises took place this past week. The yearly war drills aim to rehearse combat readiness for a potential Chinese invasion. Our team traveled to the island to join the military and speak to officials about the annual war games.

While a typhoon grounded several of the air force drills, other exercises took place across Taiwan. Throughout the week, troops opened fire on mock invading forces approaching the island and rehearsed rapid response drills to an attack.

"When you’ve got such a giant threat besides you, any kind of preparation – you cannot say it's enough," said MP Wang Ting Yu, co-chair of Taiwan’s defense and foreign relations committee. "The next few years, maybe three or five years will be a crucial moment to Asia, to the world. Once we do something right, we can deter or postpone that potential conflict," he told Fox News.

TAIWAN REACTS TO TRUMP’S THEY 'SHOULD PAY US FOR DEFENSE' COMMENTS

China views the democratically governed island as its own. Taiwanese government officials argue their best defense is deterrence.

An example of Taiwan’s defensive tactics is the island’s "porcupine strategy". Taiwanese researchers explain that with enough small defense mechanisms, the military could disincentivize an attack.

"We are trying to procure more precision weapons, maybe long range, maybe short range, missiles, air defense weaponry, anti-tank missiles. Some portable like a stinger, javelin or everything. That will make Taiwan just like a porcupine. China can attack Taiwan, but they will feel hurt," said Jyh-Shyang Sheu, a researcher at the Institute for National Defense and Security Research.

The Taiwanese government says it needs to invest in Western training and more weaponry. "The Taiwanese military need opportunities to have the real battle experience. That's what we can learn from our friends. And second, for the next few years, our indigenous submarines will become our capability, can defend our country," Wang said.

In April, Washington approved a $95 billion dollar aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The United States is also Taiwan's largest arms supplier. Earlier this year, China sanctioned 12 U.S. defense-related companies for arms sales to Taiwan in retaliation after the U.S. sanctioned Chinese companies linked to Russia.

While some analysts argue a blockade is more likely than an invasion, the tension along the Taiwan strait is a common conversation among civilians. It is even enough incentive for some residents to try to flee.

"My friends ask: Why do you want to study abroad, and I say: Because I want to get the visa elsewhere and take all my family away," said Fanyi Chao, a Taiwanese college student studying in California.

FOR CHINA'S MILITARY PLANNERS, TAIWAN IS NOT AN EASY ISLAND TO INVADE

That fear is not entirely shared around Taipei. Others told our team they think tensions will never actually amount to an invasion. "We have a Chinese saying: the barking dog will not bite people. So, they (China) are always barking, but they don’t have the guts to fight people," a man named Peter, who did not provide his last name, said.

Taiwan however, is drawing parallels between itself and Ukraine. The government says its holding talks with Kyiv on lessons learned from Russia’s invasion.

"The Russian Ukraine (situation) gives lessons, and we must further secure the peace of the Taiwan Strait," said Taiwan’s new Foreign Minister, Lin Chia-Lung, in his first briefing with foreign press since taking office earlier this year.

Those lessons are top of mind for civilians who say they doubt Western allies would come to the island’s aid.

"Because of the Ukraine-Russia war, I want to know more about this area. In the future, should a war break out, it might help me to have a chance to protect myself," said Eric Luo. The 30-year-old man is among those spending their free time learning to use firearms. As guns are illegal in Taiwan, students practice realistic airsoft guns.

"I’m a person who wants to be prepared for any situation, but peace must be the most important thing," said another student, Jason Chang.

Across the board, that statement remains consistent. Civilians in training say they want to know how to protect themselves but repeatedly stressed they desperately hope it never comes to that.

"Our fathers, grandfathers experienced wars. We are the children of that generation, so we pass our knowledge to the next generation of young people". Chi-yi Zang, an instructor at the training camp told Fox News. "Whether there will be a war or not, it is not something we ordinary people can decide, but in the face of a war, it’s up to us to protect ourselves."

Landslides swept through tea estates in southern India's Kerala state on Tuesday, killing over 50 people, authorities said, as hillsides collapsed after heavy rain and sent rivers of mud, water and boulders on homes of workers and villagers.

The hillsides gave way after midnight following torrential rainfall on Monday in the Wayanad district of Kerala, a state renowned as one of India's most popular tourist destinations. Most of the victims were estate workers and their families who were asleep at the time in makeshift tents.

Television visuals showed relief personnel working amid uprooted trees and flattened tin structures as boulders lay strewn at the site with muddy water gushing through.

HUNDREDS REPORTEDLY DEAD AFTER SEVERE LANDSLIDE STRIKES PAPUA NEW GUINEA VILLAGE

One man was stuck in chest-high mud for hours, television showed, struggling to free himself until rescue workers finally reached him.

"More than 50 dead bodies have been found but it is difficult to establish a proper count as many body parts have been spotted in the river," the state chief minister's spokesman, P.M. Manoj, told Reuters by phone.

Nearly 350 families lived in the affected region, mostly tea and cardamom estates, and 250 people had been rescued so far, state officials said. Many others are missing.

Army engineers were roped in to help build an alternate bridge after the one that linked the affected area to the nearest town of Chooralmala was destroyed, the chief minister's office said in a statement.

The weather office said there was extremely heavy rainfall over north and central Kerala so far on Tuesday, with more rain predicted through the day.

Tuesday's landslides are the worst disaster there since 2018 when heavy floods killed almost 400 people.

State cabinet minister M B Rajesh earlier said that at least 44 people were killed and 250 had been shifted to temporary shelters, but rescue efforts were hampered due to the collapse of a bridge.

"We fear the gravity of this tragedy is much more. Rescue operations are being carried out by various agencies on a war footing," Rajesh said.

Rashid Padikkalparamban, a resident involved in the relief efforts, said there were at least three landslides in the area starting around midnight, which washed away the bridge connecting the Mundakkai estates to Chooralmala.

"Many people who were working in the estates and staying in makeshift tents inside are feared trapped or missing," he said.

Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi, who won the recently-contested general election from Wayanad, but resigned as he was also elected from his family bastion in the north, said he had spoken to the state chief minister to ensure coordination with all agencies.

"The devastation unfolding in Wayanad is heartbreaking," he said in a message on X. "I have urged the union government to extend all possible support."

Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro is widely believed to have fraudulently won Sunday's election, ensuring him another 6-year term. Numerous regional governments cast doubt on the official vote tally, which showed Maduro with 51.2% of the vote, with 80% of polling stations reporting.

The opposition contends that the results are not accurate, and claims that it won the election with 70% of the vote.

Polls taken over the course of the summer consistently showed opposition candidate Edmundo González winning by double-digit margins.

When the National Electoral Council announced around midnight that Maduro received 51% of the vote, to main opposition candidate Edmundo González's 44% support, Elvis Amoroso, head of the National Electoral Council, said the results were based on 80% of voting stations and represented an irreversible trend.

Despite Maduro being declared the winner for a third term, the opposition claimed victory, setting up a showdown with the government over the results.

EXPERTS FEAR VENEZUELA'S MADURO COULD STEAL SUNDAY'S ELECTION AS OPPOSITION LEADS IN POLLS

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., condemned the result and criticized the policies of the Biden administration. "Another foreign policy fiasco from the Biden-Harris team," he wrote on X. "They gave Maduro relief from Trump oil sanctions and released his top money launderer & his two convicted drug dealer nephews in exchange for a "promise" to hold fair elections monitored by neutral international observers."

The electoral authority, controlled by Maduro loyalists, did not immediately publish the results from each of the 30,000 polling booths across the country, impeding the opposition's ability to challenge the results after alleging it only had data for about 30% of the ballot boxes.

"The Venezuelans and the entire world know what happened," González said.

Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado claimed González's margin of victory was "overwhelming." Machado said the opposition had voting results from about 40% of ballot boxes across the country and that more were expected overnight.

Officials and lawmakers in the U.S. and elsewhere expressed skepticism about the validity of Venezuela's presidential election results after Maduro was declared the victor.

A bipartisan group of congressional leaders alleged Maduro's victory to be fraudulent:

"To no one’s surprise, dictator Nicolás Maduro has once again stolen a presidential election. However, what the narco-regime will never steal is the Venezuelan people’s desire to return to democracy and live in freedom after decades of tyranny."

The statement continued, "We must prioritize uniting the free world in rejecting these sham election results and securing the release of the more than 300 Venezuelans that remain arbitrarily detained in torture centers as political prisoners."

Speaking in Tokyo on Monday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. has "serious concerns" about the announced outcome.

Blinken said the U.S. feared the result did not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people, and called for election officials to immediately release the full results. He also said the U.S. and the international community would respond accordingly.

Later on Monday, State Department deputy spokesperson Vedant Patel echoed Blinken, "We have serious concerns that this result does not reflect the will and the votes of the Venezuelan people."

VENEZUELAN MIGRANTS' BARBARIC CRIMES COME AS MADURO REFUSES TO TAKE BACK ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FROM US

Several leaders from across the region were quick to condemn the result. Reuters reported that Argentina's President Javier Milei said, "Not even (Maduro) believes the electoral scam he is celebrating. Neither does the Argentine Republic. We do not recognize fraud, we call on the international community to unite to restore the rule of law in Venezuela, and we remind the Venezuelan people that the doors of our country are open to every man who chooses to live in freedom."

Panama's new President Jose Raul Mulino wrote that, "We are putting diplomatic relations on hold until a complete review of the voting records and of the voting computer system is carried out."

Reuters also reported that El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele said, "What we saw yesterday in Venezuela has no other name than fraud. An 'election' where the official result has no relation to reality. Something obvious to anyone."

Opposition representatives in Venezuela said tallies they collected from campaign representatives at 30% of voting centers in the country showed González defeating the president.

Italy and China signed a three-year action plan on Sunday to implement past agreements and experiment with new forms of cooperation, Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on an official visit to the Chinese capital.

Meloni is trying to reset relations with China as fears of a trade war with the European Union are interwoven with continued interest in attracting Chinese investment in auto manufacturing and other sectors.

"We certainly have a lot of work to do and I am convinced that this work can be useful in such a complex phase on a global level, and also important at a multilateral level," she said in remarks at the start of a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang.

ITALIAN PM MELONI SENDS CONDOLENCES TO FAMILY OF 'HERO' FIREFIGHTER WHO WAS KILLED AT TRUMP RALLY

Her five-day visit comes several months after Italy dropped out of China's Belt and Road Initiative, a signature policy of Chinese leader Xi Jinping to build power and transportation infrastructure around the world to stimulate global trade while also deepening China's ties with other nations.

Still, Italy remains keen to pursue an otherwise strong economic relationship with China. Stellantis, a major automaker that includes Italy’s Fiat, announced in May that it had formed a joint venture with Leapmotor, a Chinese electric car startup, to begin selling EVs in Europe.

Li, addressing Italian and Chinese business leaders after the meeting with Meloni, said that China's push to upgrade its economy will increase demand for high-quality products, expanding opportunities for cooperation between companies from their two countries.

He pledged to open Chinese markets further, ensure that foreign companies get the same treatment as Chinese ones and create a transparent and predictable business environment, responding to frequently heard complaints from businesses operating in the world's second-largest economy.

"At the same time, we hope the Italian side will work with China to provide a more fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies doing business in Italy," he said.

Meloni told the business leaders that the two sides had signed an industrial collaboration memorandum that includes electric vehicles and renewable energy, which she described as "sectors where China has already been operating on the technological frontier for some time ... and is sharing the new frontiers of knowledge with partners."

Electric vehicles have also become a symbol of growing China-EU trade tensions, with the European Union imposing provisional tariffs of up to 37.6% on China-made electric vehicles in early July. The two sides are holding talks to try to resolve the issue by an early November deadline.

Meanwhile, China launched an anti-dumping investigation into European pork exports, just days after the EU announced it would impose the tariffs on Chinese EVs.

Meloni, who arrived in Beijing on Saturday, is making her first trip to China as prime minister. She has held talks with Li before, meeting in New Delhi last September during the annual G-20 summit, which brings together the leaders of 20 major nations.

Italy's decision to join the Belt and Road Initiative in 2019 appeared to be a political coup for China, giving it an inroad into Western Europe and a symbolic boost in a then-raging trade war with the United States. But Italy says the promised economic benefits didn't materialize, and its membership created friction with other Western European governments and the United States.

An Australian surfer vowed to get back on his board after a shark ripped off his leg in the waters off New South Wales last week.

Kai McKenzie, 23, was surfing near Port Macquarie on Tuesday when what he described as the "biggest shark I’ve ever seen" suddenly attacked him.

"A few days ago I went through a crazy shark attack (biggest shark I’ve ever seen) which was a very crazy scene and scared the living f--- out of me," McKenzie wrote in an Instagram post.

Authorities identified the shark as a nearly 10-foot-long great white, according to the BBC.

McKenzie saw the shark approach him in the water and was able to fight it off, but not before the ocean predator severed his right leg, according to a GoFundMe page created for the 23-year-old’s medical expenses that he linked to on Instagram.

"Clinging to life, [McKenzie] was able to catch a wave back to the beach," the page said.

Once on shore, the page said, a retired police officer used his dog’s leash to tie a tourniquet around McKenzie’s bloody leg. McKenzie was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital where he underwent surgery and is in a stable condition.

SHARK BITE REPORTED AT HILTON HEAD ISLAND RESORT IS FIRST REPORTED SHARK BITE OF YEAR ON ISLAND

The surfer’s leg washed up on shore a short time after the attack, and local locals put the appendage on ice in the hopes that surgeons could reattach it, the BBC reported. As of Monday, it was unclear whether reattachment surgery was attempted.

Nearly a week after the attack, McKenzie posted an update on Instagram.

"Spot something missing?" he wrote in a post along with a photo of him in the hospital surrounded by loved ones.

McKenzie thanked all those who helped him through the shark attack and vowed that he would be catching waves again soon.

"I’ll be back in that water in no time! BIG F--- OFF TO THAT SHARK and BIG THANKS to Steve for saving my life," the 23-year-old wrote.

JERUSALEM – The looming Israeli response against the Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorist movement in Lebanon is said to be imminent in response to the group’s rocket attack on a children’s soccer field on Saturday, resulting in the murders of 12 young people.

Early Monday, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly executed a drone strike in southern Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of two Hezbollah terrorists. The IDF has not commented on the strike. The IDF drone attacks came after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a three-hour cabinet meeting on Sunday, during which ministers authorized the prime minister and his minister of defense to determine the "manner and timing" of a military response to the lethal Hezbollah attack.

Danny Danon, Israel's new ambassador to the United Nations, told "Fox and Friends" host Steve Doocy on Monday that, Israel's "response will be swift, harsh and painful, and we are now picking the targets and I believe in the next few days, and I'm sure Hezbollah will learn their lesson." He also said Israel had no "intentions of a full war."

NETANYAHU RESPONDS TO HEZBOLLAH ATTACK THAT KILLED CHILDREN AT SOCCER FIELD: 'THIS WILL NOT GO UNANSWERED'

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken spoke with Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Monday.

"The Secretary reaffirmed the United States’ ironclad commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iranian-backed terrorist organizations, including Hezbollah. He emphasized the importance of preventing escalation of the conflict and discussed efforts to reach a diplomatic solution to allow citizens on both sides of the border between Israel and Lebanon to return home," Miller said.

The Jerusalem Post reported that French President Emmanuel Macron told Netanyahu that France was "fully committed to doing everything possible to avoid new escalation in the region by sending messages to all parties in the conflict." France, in contrast to other major European powers, Germany and Britain, has not classified Hezbollah’s entire movement as a terrorist entity. Israel and the U.S. have urged France to designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization.

Air France has suspended flights to and from Beirut due to the expectation a major war will unfold. German airline Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines and Eurowings have also suspended flights.

Israel's Druze community is still reeling from the shocking violence carried out by Hezbollah.

The scenes on Sunday were ones of sadness, shock and devastation as the residents of the mostly Druze village of Majdal Shams buried the young victims of the Hezbollah rocket attack that killed at least 12 and injured some 29 others - mostly ages between 10 and 20 as many of them innocently played soccer on Saturday.

The Druze trace their ancestry back to the Biblical figure Jethro, the father-in-law of Moses. Israeli Druze serve in senior positions in public and military life, and the bond between Jewish and Druze soldiers is referred to as the "covenant of blood." The Druze speak Arabic but are not Muslim and are very secretive about their religious beliefs, according to the TPS news agency.

TRUMP GREETS NETANYAHU AT MAR-A-LAGO, SAYS WORLD WAR III COULD HAPPEN IF HARRIS WINS

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday in Japan, Blinken said "I emphasize (Israel's) right to defend its citizens and our determination to make sure that they're able to do that," "But we also don't want to see the conflict escalate. We don't want to see it spread," according to Reuters.

Blinken also said he was in talks with the U.S. and all but confirmed that it was Hezbollah that fired the rocket from Lebanon. U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said on Sunday, "This attack was conducted by Lebanese Hezbollah. It was their rocket, and launched from an area they control. It should be universally condemned."

ODDS OF ISRAEL-HEZBOLLAH WAR 'INEVITABLE,' EXPERTS FEAR: 'TOTALLY PESSIMISTIC'

The failure to identify the U.S.-designated terrorist organization Hezbollah as the perpetrator of the Saturday massacre in the X post of the American Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew sparked criticism on the social media platform on Sunday.

David Wurmser, a former senior adviser for nonproliferation and Middle East strategy for former Vice President Dick Cheney, wrote in response to Lew’s message on X, "If I didn’t know better by your statement, it appears the attack kind of spontaneously happened by an evil missile acting on its own."

The European Union’s foreign policy head, Josep Borrell, faced similar criticism for not pinning the blame on Hezbollah for its use of an Iranian rocket to murder children.

During an operational briefing on Sunday, Israel’s Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant said of Hezbollah that "despite their ridiculous denials … they will bear a heavy price for their actions."

Hezbollah-linked media was first to report Hezbollah’s boasting about the attack, only for the terror group to later claim it was not them who did it once the barbarity of the attack became clear. The Israelis put the blame squarely on the U.S.-designated terrorist group.

The IDF said approximately 30 projectiles were identified crossing into Israel from Lebanon on Saturday. The U.S.-designated terrorist organization Hezbollah is the de facto ruler over Lebanon.

HEZBOLLAH BOMBARDS ISRAEL WITH ROCKETS, DRONES

Israel’s TPS news agency reported that the IDF raised its readiness for war. During a tour of the area, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said, "We are greatly increasing our readiness for the next stage of fighting in the north, as we are simultaneously fighting in Gaza. We know how to attack even very far from the State of Israel. There will be more challenges, we will raise our readiness.

"We know exactly where the rocket was launched from. We examined here on the wall of the soccer field the remains of the rocket, and we know to say that it is a Falaq rocket with a 53-kilogram warhead. This is a Hezbollah rocket. And whoever fires such a rocket into an urban area wants to kill civilians, wants to kill children," Halevi said.

FDD Iran Senior Fellow Behnam Ben Taleblu said the rocket came from Iran, "There should be no surprise that the munition Hezbollah fired at Israel is Iranian in design and origin. After all, when Iranian officials say death to Israel, they mean it. The weapon used in the latest attack is a spin-stabilized artillery rocket called the Falaq-1, which has a range of 10km while carrying a 50kg warhead."

Venezuela's President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner of the country's presidential election on Sunday after securing more than 50% of the vote, although the opposition contends that the results are not accurate.

The National Electoral Council said at around midnight that Maduro received 51% of the vote, while the main opposition candidate, Edmundo González, had 44% support, according to The Associated Press.

Elvis Amoroso, head of the National Electoral Council, said the results were based on 80% of voting stations and represented an irreversible trend.

Despite Maduro being declared the winner of a third term, the opposition claimed victory, setting up a showdown with the government over the results.

EXPERTS FEAR VENEZUELA'S MADURO COULD STEAL SUNDAY'S ELECTION AS OPPOSITION LEADS IN POLLS

Speaking in Tokyo, U.S.

VENEZUELAN MIGRANTS' BARBARIC CRIMES COME AS MADURO REFUSES TO TAKE BACK ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FROM US

U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio wrote on the social media platform X that the "Maduro regime in #Venezuela has just carried out the most predictable and ridiculous sham election in modern history."

Chilean President Gabriel Boric Font also wrote on X that "the delivery of the results of this transcendental election in Venezuela must be transparent, timely and fully reflect the popular will expressed at the polls."

"The international community, of which Chile is a part of, will not accept anything else," he said.

Opposition representatives in Venezuela said tallies they collected from campaign representatives at 30% of voting centers in the country showed González defeating the president.

JERUSALEM – Pressure has been mounting in recent weeks on UNRWA, the United Nations agency tasked with aiding Palestinian refugees, over its failure to condemn armed terror groups in the Gaza Strip that have openly used its internationally funded facilities, including health clinics, schools and even its main headquarters, to conduct a brutal war against Israel.

This week, Israeli lawmakers approved the first reading of a bill that would cut ties with the controversial U.N. agency and declare it a terrorist entity. Speaking in the Knesset last week, Yulia Malinovsky, the bill’s sponsor, called UNRWA "a fifth column within the State of Israel" and said it was high time that the agency was outlawed in the country.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Congress’ House Foreign Affairs Committee also passed initial legislation that would build on an already existing funding freeze of the multimillion-dollar organization and direct the State Department to recover previously donated monies.

"The U.S. has sufficient evidence at this point to impose terrorism sanctions on UNRWA," Richard Goldberg, a senior adviser at the Washington, D.C., think tank, the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told Fox News Digital.

ISRAELI DEFENSE MINISTER: 'DOZENS' OF UNRWA STAFF TOOK PART IN HAMAS’ OCT 7 MASSACRE

Goldberg, a former Trump National Security Council staff member, said the controversial organization "must be disqualified from any future role in Gaza," pointing out that "UNRWA’s existence – to incite violence and hate toward Jews and Israel – is inherently antithetical to the goal of de-radicalizing Palestinian society and moving Palestinians to self-sufficiency."

"If you keep UNRWA around for what comes next in Gaza, you are condemning both Palestinians and Israelis to a future of violence and instability," he said.

The pushback against UNRWA, which according to its website carries out critical life-saving work for some 5.9 million Palestinians in Gaza, the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, comes after Israel provided evidence that UNRWA employees actively participated in the Hamas-led Oct. 7 terror attacks in southern Israel. More than 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were murdered in the surprise attack, and a further 240, including a 9-month-old infant, were taken hostage back to Gaza.

In February, Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant told Fox News Digital that "dozens" of UNRWA employees took part in the shocking attack and, following the release of more than 100 hostages, mainly women and children, during a cease-fire deal last November, it has been revealed that some were held captive by teachers and medical staff employed by the agency.

Israel has long accused UNRWA, short for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, of perpetuating the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It points out that Palestinian refugees are the only group afforded their own separate aid agency, while refugees from almost every other global conflict – past and present – are cared for under the broader umbrella of the U.N.’s High Commissioner for Refugees. It further notes that UNRWA, established in 1949 to provide services for hundreds of thousands of Palestinians displaced when Israel was created, continues to recognize the descendants of those refugees regardless of where they were born or their current status – rather than attempting to settle them as other refugee agencies do.

DOSSIER REVEALS INFORMATION USED TO EXPLAIN UN AGENCY'S DEEP TIES TO HAMAS IN GAZA

According to UNRWA's website, its pledged budget for 2023 was $1.46 billion, with the U.S. Germany, EU and France as its biggest donors, but after Israel presented evidence that employees participated in the Oct. 7 attacks, the U.S., along with 17 other countries decided to pause funding.

In March, as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2024, Congress moved to extend the funding freeze through March 2025, even as most of the other countries decided to resume their support. Last week, under the newly installed Labor government, the U.K. said it would soon "release £21 million [$21.2 m] to support [UNRWA’s] lifesaving work in Gaza."

The resumption of funds comes even as the U.N.’s Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) continues to investigate Israel’s claims against UNRWA employees, according to an April announcement; and even as the Israeli military reports almost daily of its battles with armed terror groups in and around UNRWA-owned complexes, including buildings where Gaza civilians are sheltering.

Additionally, while UNRWA’s Commissioner General Philipe Lazzarini has been quick to condemn the fighting in his organization’s facilities – as well as the deaths of civilians, which the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry says stands at some 38,000 – he has failed to call out Hamas, and other terror factions, for purposely drawing the fighting to its centers.

Juliette Touma, director of communications for UNRWA, told Fox News Digital that the organization had "condemned all parties to the conflict over the misuse of UNRWA facilities, including Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups."

"We have made such comments repeatedly in our public statements, speeches, remarks and media interviews, including at the level of the Commissioner General," she said.

UN OFFICIAL CALLED 'TERROR SYMPATHIZING ANTISEMITE' BY ISRAELI AMBASSADOR AS CALLS GROW FOR HER DISMISSAL

"We have also reminded all parties to the conflict that U.N. facilities must never be used for military or fighting purposes," said Touma, adding that UNRWA had "called for investigations and independent inquiries of all violations of international humanitarian law."

However, the condemnations appear not to have been forceful enough.

The legislation that passed its first reading in the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, on Monday, drew the support of lawmakers from across the political spectrum. If passed into law, UNRWA would be prevented from operating inside Israeli territory and its personnel stripped of diplomatic privileges afforded to other U.N. staff.

UNRWA is also facing heat in Congress, with some members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee steadfast on maintaining the prohibition against funding – and now even seeking to rescind U.S. monies previously transferred to the agency.

On July 12, the committee voted on a bipartisan bill introduced by Rep. Brian Mast, R-Fla., and Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., directing the secretary of state to recover any federal funds already distributed to UNRWA. Passing in the committee, 24-22, Mast posted a lengthy video on X accusing those who voted against it of "willfully ignoring anything that doesn't fit into their narrative that Palestinians are victims in this war – that is what they want to put forward – instead of [recognizing that] they started this war, they started a genocide, and now this war is what's taking place."

He criticized Democrats who claim that "UNRWA was doing God’s work," noting that individuals educated in schools run by the agency were "indoctrinated… with hate for the Jews."

"For way too long, UNRWA has masqueraded as a relief organization, while in reality serving as an incubator for Palestinian terrorists," he said, adding, "Intelligence reports indicate that as many as ten percent of UNRWA workers have direct links to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihadists. It’s ludicrous that our hard-earned American tax dollars were going to fund this crap. The State Department needs to do everything it can to recoup this money."

Anne Bayefsky, director of the Touro Institute on Human Rights and the Holocaust and president of Human Rights Voices, told Fox News Digital that denying American funds for UNRWA made sense for Americans "because UNRWA is a body that fuels the hatred of Jews and the violence that results from that gross intolerance."

"This isn't conjecture. It's undeniable fact," she said, pointing out that "UNRWA employees participated in the Oct. 7 atrocities, sizable numbers of UNRWA employees are members of Hamas and other Palestinian terror organizations and UNRWA facilities have been used as Hamas command and control centers and as weapons storage depots."

"It makes sense for Americans to deny funds to UNRWA because it's the right thing to do," she said. "Terrorism, rape, and antisemitism – not on our dime!"

Archaeologists in the City of David National Park in Jerusalem have discovered massive fortifications that would have protected the city in ancient times.

"This is a dramatic discovery that opens up a renewed discussion about the terms from the biblical literature that refer to the topography of Jerusalem, such as the Ophel and the Millo," according to Prof. Yuval Gadot, director of the excavation on behalf of Tel Aviv University.

Dr. Yiftach Shalev, director of the excavation on behalf of the Antiquities Authority, added that "We are confident that it was used at the time of the First Temple and the Kingdom of Judah … so it creates a clear buffer between the residential city to the south and the upper city to the north."

Israeli archaeologists invest significant time and resources to exploring the ancient city, which helps provide evidence for ancient stories and claims about Jerusalem that many have otherwise attributed to myth.

WRECKAGE OF SCHOONER THAT SANK IN 1893 FOUND IN LAKE MICHIGAN

This particular discovery of a moat and walls helps researchers understand the structure of the ancient city: The City of David is attributed as the core of the original and ancient city of Jerusalem where King David traveled to united Israel as one capital city, according to the national park’s website

The discovery also helps redefine the shape of the city and will prompt researchers to reevaluate descriptions of the city and its limits within biblical accounts, the researchers said.

DIVERS DISCOVER 19TH CENTURY SHIPWRECK CONTAINING HISTORICAL ARTIFACTS IN BALTIC SEA

The date of the excavated moat remains unknown, but Shalev argued that often such "significant construction plants and quarrying in Jerusalem are usually dated to the Middle Bronze Age – about 3,800 years ago," which would align broadly with Jewish histories that talk of David traveling to Jerusalem 3,000 years ago.

"If the moat was dug during this period, then it was intended to protect the city from the north – the only weak point of the City of David slope," Shalev said.

RARE DINOSAUR SKELETONS FOUND AFTER CATASTROPHIC FLOODING

The researchers argue that the fortification was created by massive quarrying of the rock used to create the moat, with perpendicular cliffs "that could not be climbed" found on both sides of the moat – which puzzled the excavators until they realized they were looking at a fortification line.

Ancient Jerusalem sat on a narrow and steep spur, and many of the construction tasks for the city looked at helping reshape the topography of the surrounding area – all activities that the Bible references, such as in the first book of Kings where it discusses King Solomon’s task of building up the "Millo," or supporting terraces, and "close the breach of the city."

The results of the excavation will be presented at the City of David's "Jerusalem Studies Experience" Conference, taking place in early August.

Many French people have reacted to the Olympic Games' controversial opening ceremonies held in Paris on Friday, and not all responses are positive.

The opening ceremonies, held mainly as a boat parade down the River Seine, featured performances from international artists like Céline Dion and Olympian athletes onboard boats designated by country.

The ceremonies also featured a live reenactment of the Last Supper with drag queens and a ménage à trois sequence. The Last Supper, painted by Leonardo da Vinci, is not located in Paris but in Italy at the refectory of the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie.

VIRAL CATHOLIC LEADER: CHRISTIANS MUST NOT BE ‘WEAK’ IN THE FACE OF OLYMPICS OPENING SPECTACLE

The French Bishops' Conference released a statement on X, saying "this ceremony unfortunately included scenes of mockery and derision of Christianity, which we deeply regret. We would like to thank the members of other religious denominations who have expressed their solidarity with us."

"This morning, we are thinking of all the Christians on every continent who have been hurt by the outrageousness and provocation of certain scenes," the French Bishops' Conference added.

French President Emmanuel Macron defended the controversial opening ceremonies also via X, saying "Thanks to Thomas Jolly and his creative genius for this grandiose ceremony. Thank you to the artists for this unique and magical moment. Thank you to the police and emergency services, agents and volunteers."

Macron added, "Thank you to everyone who believed in it. We'll talk about it again in 100 years! WE DID IT !"

CHIEFS’ HARRISON BUTKER SLAMS PARIS OLYMPICS PARODY OF LAST SUPPER: ‘THIS IS CRAZY’

Thomas Jolly, 42, is a French actor and theater director from Rouen who was brought on two years ago to direct the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Paris.

Not all French people equally admired the ceremonies, however.

One French X user, @JulietteBriens, wrote "As a sincerely patriotic French girl, I disolidarise myself from this freakshow and apologize to you, world."

Her post featured screengrabs of the scenes considered most controversial from the ceremonies, including a close-up of the ménage à trois scene.

Another X user from France, @Arwenstar posted "As a French woman I am deeply embarrassed by this #OpeningCeremony and would like to apologise to the entire world for subjecting you all to this sick farce. Don’t hate us, it isn’t us, it’s the woke metropolitan elite - they ruin f****** everything"

A video has gone viral online of a French family reacting to the Last Supper reenactment, with the caption "POV: You're watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympic Games and you realize it's the last season of the Smurfs."

In the video, one member of the family can be heard shouting, "No no no no no no! What is that?!"

China has once again extended its policy of censorship and surveillance as it looks to keep artificial intelligence (AI) models in check even as it races to advance the ever-expanding technology.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has introduced more regulative measures to make sure its home-based tech companies adhere to the party’s ideological rules.

All AI firms are required to participate in a government review which analyzes the companies' large language models (LLMs) to ensure they "embody core socialist values," as first reported by the Financial Times last week.

A NEW BREED OF MILITARY AI ROBO-DOGS COULD BE MARINES' NEW SECRET WEAPON

China has long worked to suppress information accessible over the internet through the use of its "Great Firewall" — which has been used to block a litany of items perceived as bad for the CCP, such as information surrounding the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre or memes comparing Chinese President Xi Jinping to Winnie the Pooh.

This firewall is being extended to the AI arena as China rushes to advance its technologies while still governing the content it creates.

China’s Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) is now requiring AI companies like ByteDance, Moonshot and 01.AI to take part in a review process that analyzes how effectively their programs are censoring the LLMs they are building.

Chatbot systems are being developed to not only collect sensitive keywords but to also block information on questions relating to banned topics, often involving queries relating to human rights.

The AI systems in turn spit out responses like "try a different question" or "I have not yet learned how to answer this question. I will keep studying to better serve you."

But in a move to prevent the chatbots from blocking too many questions, CAC policies dictate that LLMs should not reject more than 5% of all questions, according to the Financial Times report.

WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE?

Instead, blanket answers deemed politically correct have been created to answer specific types of questions, though controlling LLMs responses is an uphill battle for developers.

China’s continued pursuit to control the narrative among its own population speaks to a greater threat, AI expert Arthur Herman, senior fellow and director of the Quantum Alliance Initiative with the Hudson Institute, told Fox News Digital.

"That is the future that China has charted for its own citizens," Herman said. "This is also how they see… being able to control the world of others."

Herman pointed to China’s burgeoning relationship with the global south, where social media platforms like WeChat have taken off.

"There will inevitably be a social control, a mind control, element that goes into those programs… and to shape a world that looks more and more like China wants it to look," he said.

Herman also warned that these strategies are not only playing out on internet platforms in authoritarian nations, but anywhere that the platforms are accessible, including the U.S.

"They have mastered the art of brainwashing through TikTok," Herman said. "Chinese engineers have found a way to create a social media platform which is highly addictive, and which is also highly geared towards brainwashing its users to see the world in a certain way and to respond to visual and audio cues in a certain way."

Herman said China’s use of TikTok technologies is just a "foretaste" of how Beijing can use AI applications to manipulate populations beyond its borders.

"China sees AI as a means by which to change people's minds," he said. "AI's ability to enhance those kinds of brainwashing and mind control applications is so powerful…that even when you're not actually under a surveillance camera, even when you're not actually listening to or watching government-inspired propaganda… there are other subtler ways in which your mind is being changed and adjusted simply by your interaction with things that are taking place in daily life — which are more and more directed by how the Communist Party wants you to see the world."

Kai McKenzie, 23, was surfing off New South Wales in Australia when he was attacked by a shark, New South Wales police said.

"Clinging to life, he was able to catch a wave back to the beach," a fundraising site set up for McKenzie said. "A retired police officer used his dog’s lead as a tourniquet to stem the bleeding before the victim could be airlifted to hospital."

Amazingly, McKenzie’s leg washed up on the beach after the attack and doctors are hoping to be able to reattach it.

McKenzie has undergone surgery and remains in critical but stable condition, according to ABC News Australia and the fundraising site.

MASSIVE BULL SHARK WEIGHING NEARLY 500 POUNDS CAUGHT AT ALABAMA FISHING TOURNAMENT

Luke Short, who makes McKenzie’s surfboards, told ABC they had all hoped "we heard it wrong."

"It's amazing that he's survived," he added.

His surf team RAGE called McKenzie the "toughest person we know."

"Sending love to @kai_mckenzie the youngest RAGE boy on the team and the toughest person that we know," the team wrote on Instagram this week. "Yesterday he was attacked by a shark and has lost his leg while surfing in Port Macquarie. He has been through a lot breaking his back last year, he never once complained always just got on with doing what he loved as soon as possible. He is an inspiring person. The whole rage gang loves you man and we will see you soon."

SHARK BITE REPORTED AT HILTON HEAD ISLAND RESORT IS FIRST REPORTED SHARK BI OF YEAR ON ISLAND

Kirran Mowbray of NSW Ambulance called McKenzie "courageous" during a 7News Sydney on-air broadcast. "He turned around, caught a wave into shore."

She added that the off-duty officer "used the lead off a dog as a tourniquet to wrap around the young man’s leg and essentially saved his life."

Kevin Young, vice president of Bite Club, a shark attack survivors club, told the broadcast: "And I know he lost a leg and they packed it with ice and they’re going down to try to reattach it. That just blows my brain that that might be possible."

Mid North Coast Police Chief Insp. Stuart Campbell said they would be working to try to find out what type of shark bit McKenzie.

U.S. forces in the Middle East have destroyed Houthi drones in Yemen in the past 24 hours, the military said Friday

Separately, forces with the U.S. Central Command destroyed three uncrewed Houthi surface vessels operating of the Yemeni coast, CENTCOM said.

"It was determined these weapons presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region," a Centcom statement said. "These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure."

LARGE EXPLOSION ROCKS TEL AVIV IN MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT

U.S. forces have engaged with Iran-backed Houthi drones and militia for months following the group's assault on commercial ships in the Mediterranean Sea. The group began targeting merchant ships in opposition to Israel's war against Hamas.

Last week, Israel launched surgical strikes against the Houthis after the terror group fired a lethal drone into Tel Aviv, resulting in the death of an Israeli and at least 10 injured and severe damage to buildings.

The strike took place near the U.S. consulate building in Tel Aviv.

"The fire that is currently burning in Yemen, is seen across the Middle East," Israel's Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant said after the strikes in Yemen. "The first time that the Houthis harmed an Israeli citizen, we struck them. And we will do this in any place where it may be required."

South African police arrested 95 Libyan nationals in a raid on a suspected secret military training camp on Friday and authorities said they were investigating whether there were more illegal bases in other parts of the country.

The camp was discovered at a farm in White River in the Mpumalanga province, about 360 kilometers (220 miles) northeast of Johannesburg, police said.

ELEPHANTS KILL TOURIST IN SOUTH AFRICA AFTER HE TRIED TO GET CLOSE TO TAKE PICTURES

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said in a post on the social media site X that the Libyans stated they had entered the country on study visas to train as security guards, but police investigations suggest they have received military training.

The Newzroom Afrika TV news channel broadcast pictures of the site of the arrests, showing a military-style camp with large green and khaki tents set up in a row. Dozens of men were seen lining up as they were arrested. They were wearing civilian clothing.

Local government official Jackie Macie said investigations were ongoing and the owner of the farm would be questioned. He said authorities received information that there were similar secret camps near two other towns in Mpumalanga province.

The province borders neighboring countries Mozambique and Swaziland and is an area of concern for South African authorities with regards to illegal immigration.

Police and authorities have not said whether the camps are suspected of being connected to a particular group or conflict.

Macie said investigations would establish if there was a network of camps in South Africa and show "why they are here doing military training in our country."

Police said the men may be linked to crimes reported in communities close to the farm in recent months.

"We have serious cases which have been opened with the police, including cases of rape and armed robberies, which complainants claim were committed by unknown foreigners who seem to be of Asian descent," said police spokesman Donald Mdhluli.

"We take what we have found here today very seriously because we don’t know who was training them, what were they being trained for and why that training is happening here in South Africa. It may be a threat not only to South Africa but also to the entire southern Africa region."

Police said the operation to arrest the Libyans and close down the camp began two days ago. Macie said the Libyan nationals had been in the country since at least April.

"The 95 individuals taken into custody are all Libyan nationals and are currently being questioned by the relevant authorities," Mpumalanga acting provincial police commissioner Maj. Gen. Zeph Mkhwanazi said in a statement.

Mdhluli, the police spokesman, said the country's security regulator had confirmed that the kind of training that appears to have been taking place at the camp was well beyond the scope of training for security guards.

"The kind of equipment we found here shows that there was intense military training taking place here. This was basically a military base."

A major rail system in France has been massively disrupted ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremonies later today.

Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français (SNCF) tweeted Friday morning that "Following this massive attack aimed at paralyzing the high-speed line network, a large number of trains were diverted or canceled."

Jean-Pierre Farandou, the CEO of SNCF, told reporters Friday the attacks on the rail system included "arson" and intentionally damaging cables. The state-run rail line said it doesn't know who's behind the attacks.

Trains to and from Paris will ultimately be affected, and SNCF said approximately 800,000 travelers could feel the effect.

"Affected travelers will be contacted by email or SMS. We ask all travelers who can to postpone their trip and not to go to the station," the rail line continued.

SNCF called the attacks on the three railway lines — the Atlantic, North and East — "an attack on France."

Farandou said rail cables, which are there for safety, became damaged and will need repair.

"Therefore we have to pull them back together one by one, reconnect all these cables and test them. It’s a question of security. We have to make sure we test them so when trains are back up and running, they are safe," Farandou said.

Farandou said that for one of the fires, two destinations were hit, adding that it was "a premeditated, calculated, coordinated attack" that indicates "a desire to seriously harm" the French people.

In addition to the French population, this will be a busier-than-normal weekend and two weeks with spectators from around the world flocking to France for the Games, the first in Paris in 100 years since the city hosted the 1924 Games. Paris also hosted the 1900 Games.

French sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castera said Olympic organizers would "ensure the proper transport of all delegations to the competition sites."

The Opening Ceremony will be on the Seine River beginning at 1:30 p.m. ET, the first kickoff to a Summer Olympics that won't be held in a stadium setting.

There have been no reports of injuries.

JERUSALEM — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is slated to meet former President Trump on Friday at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in an effort to repair a fractured relationship.

After President Biden defeated Trump in the 2020 presidential election, Netanyahu congratulated President-elect Biden, prompting Trump to call out the Israeli leader and was quoted as saying "I haven’t spoken to him since," according to comments released from an interview with Israeli journalist Barak Ravid. "F--k him," Trump added.

In his tweet, Netanyahu said, "Congratulations Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Joe, we’ve had a long and warm personal relationship for nearly 40 years, and I know you as a great friend of Israel," Netanyahu wrote on Twitter. "I look forward to working with both of you to further strengthen the special alliance between the US and Israel."

NETANYAHU SEEMS TO CONTRADICT BIDEN CEASE-FIRE OFFER: 'NONSTARTER' IF ALL CONDITIONS NOT MET

Netanyahu is now working to repair his relationship with Trump. During his Thursday speech to Congress, the prime minister paid tribute to Trump’s accomplishments in the Middle East.

"I want to thank President Trump for his leadership in brokering the historic Abraham Accords. Like Americans, Israelis were relieved that President Trump emerged safe and sound from that dastardly attack on him, dastardly attack on American democracy. There is no room for political violence in democracies," said the Israeli leader.

Trump and his Mideast team brokered the Abraham Accords, a series of diplomatic normalization agreements between Israel and the Sunni Arab countries of the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco.

Netanyahu continued in his speech "I also want to thank President Trump for all the things he did for Israel, from recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, to confronting Iran’s aggression, to recognizing Jerusalem as our capital and moving the American Embassy there. That’s Jerusalem, our eternal capital never to be divided again."

Michael Makovsky, president and CEO of the Jewish Institute for National Security of America, told Fox News Digital, "It’s very important for both men and both the U.S. and Israel that Netanyahu and Trump have a very positive meeting tomorrow, and I’m sure that will be the case. They had a close relationship when Trump was president, but then Trump expressed dissatisfaction with Netanyahu a couple of times. Still, Trump knows the Republican base is very pro-Israel, with the latest example being all the Republican-led standing ovations yesterday during Netanyahu’s speech to Congress."

"Trump can also pick up some independent or Democratic voters upset about Biden’s shift on Israel this year and the concern over [Vice President] Kamala Harris’ views toward Israel," Makovsky said. "Anyway, Trump is fundamentally pro-Israel. And Netanyahu keenly understands that strong U.S. backing, both in public and private, is pivotal to Israel addressing its many post-10/7 threats in Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, Yemen, etc., and the chances of normalization with Saudi Arabia; and if Trump is re-elected, they need to have close personal ties, which is critical for Trump. In any case, it’s critical for U.S. national security interests for the U.S. to have close ties with Israel."

The new chapter in Trump-Netanyahu relations looks to already be unfolding, with Trump welcoming the Israeli leader’s recognition of his Mideast diplomatic breakthroughs.

Trump told "Fox & Friends" on Thursday that Netanyahu was "very nice to me yesterday. He mentioned me in the speech very nicely, and I appreciated that he's coming to see me."

The former president, however, warned the Israeli leader that he needs to put the prosecution of the war against the U.S.-designated terrorist movement Hamas on the fast track: "I want him to finish up and get it done quickly. You got to get it done quickly because they are getting decimated with this publicity. And, you know, Israel is not very good at public relations."

Trump also said that Hamas’ mass slaughter of nearly 1,200 people, including more than 30 Americans, on Oct. 7 in southern Israel would not have happened if he had been re-elected in 2020: "Oct. 7th would have never happened if I was president. There was no chance. Iran was broke, they had no money for Hamas or Hezbollah. It just wouldn't have happened, zero chance."

Trump said the nine-month war in Gaza to root out Hamas terrorists has lasted too long: "I'd make sure that it gets over with fast. You have to end this fast. It can't continue to go on like this. It's too long, it's too much. You got to get your hostages back."

Hamas continues to hold more than 100 hostages in Gaza, including eight Americans.

"This is a very tricky moment for a foreign leader to come to the United States. Asking for meetings with Biden, Harris and Trump was the appropriate way to handle it," Richard Goldberg, who served on the National Security Council during the Trump administration, told Fox News Digital.

Goldberg, who is now a senior adviser for the Washington, D.C.-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies, continued, "I think you’d probably see a return to a formula that best promotes security, stability and peace: maximum pressure on Iran and maximum support to Israel."

France will provide elite police officers to safeguard Israeli athletes throughout the Olympic Games due to security concerns as the opening ceremony gets underway Friday.

"There are those who seek to undermine the celebratory nature of this joyous event," Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz wrote in a letter to his French counterpart.

"We currently have assessments regarding the potential threat posed by Iranian terrorist proxies and other terrorist organizations who aim to carry out attacks against members of the Israeli delegation and Israeli tourists during the Olympics," Katz added.

European authorities have remained on high alert as the Olympics bring an influx of threats and security concerns, especially with the presence of Israel. Some terrorist and radical groups want to see the country punished for its actions in the Gaza Strip.

2024 PARIS OLYMPICS: EVERYTHING TO KNOW ABOUT THIS YEAR'S SUMMER GAMES

Tensions remain so high that a video of a fake Palestinian threat of attacks on France made the rounds on social media before a security source could tell the AFP that the video likely originated from "a Russian operation under a ‘false flag,’" pointing to "several clues" that betray the authenticity of the video.

French authorities have designated roughly 1,000 elite anti-terrorist officers to provide a "ring of steel" for the Israeli team amid anti-Israel protests, Reuters reported. Officials happily reported that the first competition involving Israeli athletes, a soccer match between Israel and Mali Wednesday, passed a security test.

Israel’s Shin Bet security agency will work with the French police to keep the area and Games safe for their athletes, but other criminal threats remain major concerns as the games get underway.

Belgian police on Thursday detained seven people suspected of planning a terrorist attack, with authorities reporting that the individuals may have participated in "the activities of a terrorist group," including financing and preparing for an attack.

The police explained that "the specific targets of the attack had not yet been determined," but the threat had risen to the level of requiring police raids on 14 homes across Belgium, according to German outlet DW.

The timing of the raids — just one day before the Games begin — prompted questions of links between the attack and the competition, but Belgian and French authorities did not comment on whether there were any such links.

The preparation and focus on more international tensions has also allowed other crimes to occur before the Games get underway. French prosecutors earlier this week opened an inquiry after an Australian woman reported that five men allegedly attacked and gang-raped her

An investigative source told The Telegraph the woman was wandering around the northern Pigalle district in Paris over the weekend in an apparent state of distress and disarray. She then reportedly confronted one of her alleged attackers in a kebab shop, but he fled before police could arrive.

CCTV footage captured the latter confrontation, but Paris prosecutors would not comment on the video while confirming a gang-rape investigation. No arrests have been made, nor have police released any descriptions of the alleged attackers.
